Symbol
The symbol for an NPN
transistor consists of three terminals: the emitter (E), base (B), and
collector (C). The arrow on the emitter leg points outward, indicating
the direction of conventional current flow (from positive to negative).
Applications:
• Used as amplifiers in audio and radio frequency circuits.
• Employed as switches in digital circuits.
• Common in current regulation circuits.
Working Principle
NPN
transistors are composed of two n-type (negative) semiconductor
materials separated by a thin layer of p-type (positive) material. The
three regions are:
- Emitter (E): Heavily doped n-type material that emits electrons.
- Base (B): Thin, lightly doped p-type material.
- Collector (C): Moderately doped n-type material that collects electrons.
When
a small current flows into the base (B), it allows a larger current to
flow from the collector (C) to the emitter (E). This is because the
electrons from the emitter diffuse into the base, where they recombine
with holes. The thin base region allows most of these electrons to reach
the collector, creating a larger current flow. This process makes NPN
transistors ideal for switching and amplification purposes.
